What separates a great mobile RPG from a grind trap
The difference between an RPG you can't put down and one you delete after a week almost always comes down to progression. When leveling up unlocks new options rather than just bigger numbers, you stay curious. When it's the reverse, you burn out.
Emberfall Saga is a good recent example. Its skill trees branch in ways that make you want to rebuild your characters, and combat stays engaging because positioning matters more than raw stats. That's the sweet spot.
Watch for a few red flags when you try a new mobile RPG. If the first hour throws timers and energy meters at you before you understand the combat, that's usually a sign the game values retention over fun. Good RPGs let you play at your own pace.
My advice: give any mobile RPG at least three chapters before judging it. The tutorial rarely reflects the real game, and the best ones open up right when you're about to give up.
